My house has off peak electricity for our water heaters. It was required by the electric company to have 100 gallon supply of hot water (2 water heaters in our case) to have enough hot water to last while the electricity is shut off to the heaters. We use very little water and would like to shut one off, however they are on the same circuit. Is it possible (and safe) to just disconnect the elements from one of the water heaters in order to save electricity? If so, how can I do this. Note that the water heaters are plumbed in series, so I would like to shut off the first one.
