My oil burner heats my hot water. My plumber told me that 20 to 25% of your oil usage is just heating the hot water. He said I could get an electric hot water heater instead for around 0. I’m just concerned with the rate cap coming off PPL in 2009.

I had a defective water heater replaced this afternoon but the plumber didn’t test the water in the house before leaving. When I washed my hands the first couple of times I used only the hot water faucet and the water was really bubbly like I used a ton of soap but it was just the water bubbling like crazy. The bubbles aren’t as "foamy" as they were the first couple of times I turned on the faucet but there are still a lot of bubbles and I can hear the air in the line. The cold water comes out just fine but when I first turn on the hot water it sputters. Is this normal when a water heater is first installed or should I ask the plumber to return?
I need a plumbing diagram for a solar hot water heater with a heat exchanger, circulating pump, and a heater? I need a plumbing diagram for a solar hot water heater with a heat exchanger( separate and not in a tank ),circulating pump, and a heater,in a closed loop system, along with a temperature control for the pump.
How to drain a gas hot water heater in third floor condo with drainage pan? I have a 6 year old gas hot water heater and it is time for it to be drained. The previous homeowner drained it annually and it’s time for me to try. It has a drainage pan underneath it which has a pipe running into the floor. We live on the third (top) floor of our condominium building and the hot water heater is located directly beside my washer/dryer in a closet. The hot water heater is a direct-vent model. I know I need to turn the gas off and open a hot water faucet in order to drain it. Would I drain it directly into the drainage pan? I want to avoid hiring a plumber for this and do it myself if it’s not too much trouble.
I don’t have the ability to let it drain out my door as our building has an inside entrance with an elevator. Our condo association will not allow me to drain it out the window. I will see if I can just use the drainage pan. If not, would it be ok to drain it into my washing machine since it’s right beside the heater?
All of the sudden I don’t hardly have any hot water. Just enough to take maybe a 2 minute shower. This is with only the hot water faucet turned on, not the cold, and the water is not super super hot like it normally would be with just the hot water faucet turned on, just warm enough to shower. And then after the 2 minutes it quickly gets colder and colder and then its gone. Coincidentally, this started as soon as it got really really cold outside, which is what makes me wonder if my water heater is broken or if it is something else. The energy guide sticker on it is dated October 1988 so it is really old….. Should I just replace it or could it be something else? I don’t want to replace it and still not have hot water. I have 4 kids in the house!
It’s an Electric. But I was thinking the same thing, replacing it will save me money anyways. But I still don’t want to replace it and still not have hot water so i want to make sure it couldn’t be frozen pipes or something…..
Thanks guys. Luckily I can afford to replace it. I might not be able to get the very top of the line but I am going to get the best my budget can afford. Actually it hasn’t given ME many years of service, lol. I just bought my first house 6 months ago, and I have been having things break on me right and left!! I love being a home owner but…it’s expensive and frustrating!
we are living in this house that we thought we were going to be able to fix up and make it our home. after a few months of being here we noticed that the main support wall is falling in. and this past winter we went to turn on the heater and realized the duct work was rusted out under th house. you can look in the vent holes and see about a foot of water under the house maybe more. and there is no furnace. this house is unsafe for anyone to be living in. we are looking for a new place we just don’t want anyone else to have to go through what we have been going through.there is a major water leak under the house that we can’t get to because of all the water under there. we have tried pumping it out several times blew up one pump and water is still coming from somewhere. if there is anyone that know who i need to contact please let me know.
I have recently moved to a new home and the gas water heater is located in the attic. I have noticed that all of my cold water faucets start out cold for a few seconds and then the water starts to get warm but not hot. What could be the problem?

I wanted to fix a leaky faucet so I turned the knob on the water heater to turn off the hot water. The knob/valve kept turning, both directions, without the normal resistance you feel when turning on or off a valve. It did cut the hot water off. But now it won’t come back on. I’ve tried turning the valve both ways and nothing. When I turn the hot water faucet on in the house it will run for a couple of seconds before dwindling down to nothing. I let it sit overnight hoping it just needed to re-pressurize itself but that didn’t help.
Any ideas of what could be going wrong?
Here’s a picture of the heater:

(The knob/valve I was talking about is the blue one on top)
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have a 30 gallon, natural gas water heater and seem to run out of hot water rather quickly. Taking a shower the water starts to go cold after only about 10 minutes. After looking at the water heater one day i noticed that the pipes are switched around. The cold water goes in where the hot water should come out, and vice versa. I recently purchased this home, so this was done before i bought the house. The water heater has the paperwork and sales receipt with it and it is only 5years old. So i don’t think that it would be filled up with hard water and lime deposits already.

It is also coming out of the faucet in the bathroom. Is there some maintenance we should be doing?
