In my directions on replacing it it says to shut off the gas at the main valve beside the hot water heater. I’ve located it, but am unable to turn it off. I know this may sound stupid, but is it completely necessary to turn it off before I replace it?

This is a disclaimer by the company in case something should happen. It clears them of liability. Just turn the dial on the heater to off .
Try shutting off your gas at the meter and then change your thermo coupling. Although can change it with out shutting off the gas, you shouldn’t try it. Gas isn’t something you want to play with. Just shut it off or call a plumber. Better safe than no eyebrows. Good Luck!!
nah, just turn off power to heater and close the gas / pilot vlv
yes! yes! yes!
I have replaced them without turning gas off….but turn your temp dial as low as it will go. There is also a valve on top of temp box that lets you turn off the unit. Most of the time you won’t have to loosen a gas line to replace it.
It is best to avoid accidents, try closing the gas line at the meter, below it, if you can not then call the gas company they will do for free.
